To know whether a sofa will fit through your door, compare the largest piece that will actually travel through the home with the narrowest usable part of the entire route. Measure the entrance, halls, turns, stairs, elevator, and room doorway—not only the front door. For a compressed sofa, run the test twice: once for the delivery carton and once for the expanded sofa you may need to move later.
That second test is easy to miss. Couch Possum sofas arrive compressed, but the current return policy says an opened sofa cannot be returned to its original vacuum-compressed condition. Move-in fit and move-out fit are different questions.
Start with the two-fit rule
Fit 1: delivery fit
Use package dimensions, carton count, and carton weight. This is the object you need to move from the curb or lobby to the room before opening. A product with two cartons requires two successful route checks.
Fit 2: ownership fit
Use the expanded overall dimensions and any information about separable pieces. This check covers the room layout, future rearranging, and the next move. Do not assume a soft sofa can bend around any corner, and do not assume you can vacuum-pack it at home.
Measure the route in travel order
- Drop-off point: note gates, exterior steps, porch rails, and building doors.
- Entrance door: measure the clear opening with the door fully open. Hardware and the door slab can reduce the usable width.
- Hallways: record the narrowest width and ceiling height, plus anything that cannot be removed.
- Turns: measure the open space before and after every corner. A long carton can pass a narrow straight hall yet fail to rotate.
- Stairs and landings: measure width, overhead clearance, railing constraints, and the landing where the item must pivot.
- Elevator: measure the door opening, cabin width, depth, height, and the route from elevator to unit.
- Room entrance: repeat the clear-opening and turn measurements at the final door.
- Final footprint: tape the expanded width and depth on the floor and check doors, vents, drawers, and walking paths.
IKEA’s large-item guidance also tells buyers to check package size against entrances, corridors, and the rest of the delivery path. That is the right principle. A generic “standard doorway” number is not a substitute for measuring your doorway.
Make a one-page route worksheet
| Pinch point | Clear width | Clear height | Turning space / depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Building entrance | ___ | ___ | ___ | Door closer, threshold, rail |
| Narrowest hallway | ___ | ___ | ___ | Radiator, light, artwork |
| Tightest turn | ___ | ___ | ___ | Direction of turn |
| Stair / landing | ___ | ___ | ___ | Rail and ceiling |
| Elevator | ___ | ___ | ___ | Door and cabin measured separately |
| Room door | ___ | ___ | ___ | Handle and door swing |
Record inches or centimeters consistently. Photos of each turn help a delivery team understand the route, but photographs do not replace measurements.
Couch Possum delivery dimensions
| Product | Carton | Package dimensions | Package weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud Sofa | 1 of 2 | Approx. 43" × 16" × 16" | Approx. 72–74 lb |
| Cloud Sofa | 2 of 2 | Approx. 43" × 16.25" × 16.25" | Approx. 78–79 lb |
| Fold Lounge | 1 of 1 | 46" × 16.25" × 16.25" | Approx. 91–93 lb |
| Lounge Chair | Bed, 1 of 2 | 41.75" × 15.75" × 15.25" | 61.4 lb |
| Lounge Chair | Ottoman, 2 of 2 | 31.75" × 13.38" × 13.38" | 41.5 lb |
These dimensions do not produce an automatic yes or no. The 46-inch length of the Fold Lounge carton, for example, matters at a landing even if the carton’s smaller sides pass the doorway. Its listed 91–93 lb weight also changes the handling plan. A fit that works on paper still needs enough people and safe clearance to move the carton.
Then test the expanded footprint
| Product | Expanded overall dimensions | Room-planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Sofa | 105.7" W × 68.8" D × 24.4" H | The 68.8-inch depth creates a large floor footprint; tape it before buying |
| Fold Lounge | 39.4" W × 51.2" D × 40.5" H | Narrower listed width, but confirm how the convertible position uses space |
| Lounge Chair | 52" W × 62" D × 25" H | A personal lounge footprint rather than a compact upright chair footprint |
Overall dimensions do not reveal usable seat dimensions or every operating position. The Fold Lounge page currently does not publish a separate unfolded sleeping footprint, so a buyer who needs that exact clearance should request it before ordering.
Three outcomes—and what to do
- Clear fit: every carton is smaller than every constrained opening, turns have margin, weight is manageable, and the expanded footprint works. Keep the worksheet for delivery day.
- Tight but plausible: a dimension is close, the path turns, or the carton is heavy. Send measurements and photos to support or your delivery provider before ordering. Do not treat “probably” as a delivery plan.
- No fit: one fixed pinch point is smaller than the necessary orientation or there is no turning space. Choose a different format, resolve the route, or use professional help rather than betting the walls and sofa on a pivot.
Delivery-day checklist
- Clear rugs, tables, lamps, pets, and children from the route.
- Protect corners and floors where appropriate.
- Confirm all cartons arrived before opening any of them.
- Move the compressed packages to the final room before unboxing.
- Recheck the taped footprint.
- Photograph damaged packaging before it is moved or discarded.
Measure the box, the building, and the future. That is less exciting than “pivot,” but considerably better for the doorframe.
Sources and scope
Couch Possum specifications were verified on August 31, 2026. General route guidance was cross-checked with IKEA’s large-product delivery guidance and Ashley’s before-delivery checklist. No universal doorway minimum is asserted.
