An online sofa listing is complete only when it answers the questions that could change your decision. A beautiful room photo and three overall dimensions are not enough. Before buying, sort every important fact into one of three columns: listed, confirmed in writing, or unknown. Unknown is not automatically bad—but it should never quietly turn into an assumption.
This 24-field checklist covers the product, your body, delivery, care, and the exit plan. You may not need every field. Circle the ones that could make you return the sofa, then refuse to guess about those.
1–6: the expanded product
- Overall width: the widest fixed point, including arms.
- Overall depth: the complete front-to-back footprint, not usable seat depth.
- Overall height: the tallest point in the normal configuration.
- Configuration footprint: dimensions for every chaise, bed, reclined, or open position you will use.
- Component dimensions: the largest piece after any normal separation or disassembly.
- Expanded weight: total and per movable component.
Use these for the room and for the next move. The label “chair” does not guarantee a compact footprint; Couch Possum’s Lounge Chair, for example, is listed at 52 inches wide by 62 inches deep.
7–11: the part your body uses
- Usable seat width: space between the arms or other boundaries.
- Usable seat depth: front edge to the front of the back cushion in normal use.
- Seat height: floor to the top of the uncompressed seat.
- Back height and angle: what supports the torso, not overall product height.
- Arm dimensions: height, width, and whether they reduce lying length.
These measurements predict posture better than overall dimensions. If you plan to sit upright, work, nap, or host two adults, write the job beside each number. A measurement without a use case is just inventory.
12–15: delivery and setup
- Carton count: verify every carton before opening.
- Carton dimensions: compare each box with every door, hall, stair, turn, and elevator.
- Carton weight: decide who can move it and whether professional help is needed.
- Setup method and time: assembly, tools, connectors, compression recovery, and when the product is ready to judge.
Compressed furniture makes the package smaller, not weightless. Couch Possum’s Fold Lounge ships in one carton measuring 46 by 16.25 by 16.25 inches and weighing approximately 91–93 pounds. That is a different handling problem from a pair of lighter cartons.
16–20: construction, care, and claims
- Internal construction: frame, suspension, foam layers, fill, connectors, and replaceable parts.
- Upholstery composition: actual fiber content, not only a texture name.
- Care method: the approved process for each removable and fixed component.
- Capacity: the manufacturer’s stated load limit and how it applies to each configuration.
- Performance evidence: what test supports “stain resistant,” “pet friendly,” or “durable,” and what that test does not prove.
“Removable,” “washable,” “performance,” and “pet-friendly” answer different questions. A zipper does not authorize machine washing. A high abrasion result does not prove resistance to claws, liquids, odors, seam failure, or every form of household wear.
21–24: ownership and exit
- Written warranty: duration, covered parts, exclusions, remedy, and who pays shipping or labor.
- Return window: when the clock starts and the condition required.
- Return logistics: authorization, packaging, pickup, restocking fee, and shipping responsibility.
- Replacement path: covers, cushions, components, hardware, and how long they are expected to remain available.

Turn the checklist into a decision
Mark each circled field:
- Green: published clearly on the product or policy page.
- Yellow: confirmed by support in writing.
- Red: unknown, contradictory, or supported only by a photo or slogan.
A sofa can survive a few red fields if they do not affect your household. It should not survive a red field for the one fact you care about most. A pet owner may make care instructions decisive. A fourth-floor renter may care most about carton weight and expanded move-out. Someone who needs upright support should not buy without seat height and usable depth.
Browse the current Couch Possum range with the checklist open. The point is not to turn shopping into paperwork. It is to make the unknowns visible before they become a sofa-sized problem.
