Compressed Sofa Expansion: What to Expect in the First 48 Hours

A compressed Couch Possum sofa may need up to 48 hours to recover its intended shape and comfort after unboxing. During that window, wrinkles, compressed areas, or unevenness can be normal. Obvious shipping damage, a wrong product or color, tears, or missing components are different: document those as soon as you see them rather than waiting for the foam to settle.

The useful question is not “Does it look perfect after ten minutes?” It is “What should I verify before opening, what should I observe during recovery, and which problems should I report now?”

Before you cut the compression bag

Opening is the point where a small delivery becomes full-size furniture. Couch Possum’s return policy says an opened sofa cannot be returned to its original vacuum-compressed condition, so take five minutes for checks that are still easy while the cartons are closed.

  1. Match the shipment to the order. Check product name, color, and carton count. The Cloud Sofa and Lounge Chair list two cartons; Fold Lounge lists one.
  2. Inspect the cartons. Photograph crushed corners, punctures, water exposure, or labels showing a different item.
  3. Confirm the final footprint. Tape the expanded overall dimensions on the floor. A box fitting through the door does not mean the expanded sofa fits the room.
  4. Read the return terms. A change-of-mind return and a damaged-item claim have different shipping responsibilities.
  5. Choose the recovery spot. Use a clean area with enough room for the full product. Follow the product instructions rather than improvising with heat or tools.

A practical first-48-hours log

Couch Possum gives an upper window—up to 48 hours—not a promise that every section will change at the same rate. Use a simple log instead of repeatedly deciding whether each crease is permanent.

When What to do What not to conclude yet
Before opening Photograph cartons and labels; verify item, color, and carton count Do not assume a damaged carton means the product is damaged; document both
Immediately after opening Check for wrong parts, wrong color, tears, cuts, or missing components Do not judge final fullness from the just-opened shape
During recovery Give every section space; note whether compressed areas are changing Temporary wrinkles or unevenness are not automatically defects
At 48 hours Take well-lit photos from several angles and compare the whole product with the listing Do not diagnose materials or attempt a repair without instructions

Keep the original order email and your photos together. If support needs to assess a problem, a dated sequence is more useful than one close-up with no view of the full sofa.

Normal recovery question or immediate support issue?

Usually appropriate to observe through the stated recovery window

  • Wrinkles caused by compression
  • Areas that look temporarily flatter than adjacent sections
  • Minor unevenness while the product is taking shape

Couch Possum’s FAQ and return policy explicitly say these can occur during the initial expansion period.

Document and report without waiting for expansion

  • A tear, cut, or other obvious damage
  • The wrong product or color
  • A missing component or carton
  • Clear shipping damage unrelated to the sofa’s compressed shape

The 48-hour wait does not apply to those issues under Couch Possum’s current policy.

Couch Possum carton and expansion reference

Product Cartons Published carton size Published weight
Cloud Sofa 2 Approx. 43" × 16" × 16"; approx. 43" × 16.25" × 16.25" Approx. 72–74 lb; approx. 78–79 lb
Fold Lounge 1 46" × 16.25" × 16.25" Approx. 91–93 lb
Lounge Chair 2 Bed: 41.75" × 15.75" × 15.25"; ottoman: 31.75" × 13.38" × 13.38" 61.4 lb; 41.5 lb

All three listings state an expansion time of up to 48 hours. No current product page gives a product-specific instruction to use heat, steam, beating, or another acceleration method. Without written instructions, letting the sofa recover naturally is the lower-risk choice.

Five mistakes that make the situation harder

  1. Opening before checking the room. Once expanded, the product occupies its full footprint and cannot simply go back into the original box.
  2. Throwing away evidence immediately. Keep labels and photographs until the item, color, quantity, and condition are confirmed.
  3. Using heat without instructions. Heat can affect fabrics, adhesives, or foam. “It might expand faster” is not product-specific care guidance.
  4. Waiting on obvious damage. Expansion time is relevant to shape recovery, not to a tear or wrong item.
  5. Assuming a compressed arrival means an easy return. Couch Possum says opened sofas cannot be restored to their original vacuum-compressed condition.

What to send support

If a compression-related issue remains after the full 48-hour window, Couch Possum asks customers to contact support with an order number and clear photos or videos. Make the evidence easy to evaluate:

  • one photo of the complete product;
  • one photo from the side and one from the front;
  • close-ups of each affected area;
  • a photo of the carton label;
  • the time since unboxing;
  • a short description of what changed—or did not change—during recovery.

For obvious shipping damage or an incorrect order, contact support promptly rather than waiting for the expansion clock. The current contact address is listed on the Contact Us page.

Plan for the next move now

Compressed delivery solves move-in, not necessarily move-out. The refund policy tells customers not to attempt to recompress an expanded Couch Possum sofa or force it back into the original box. Before choosing the product, compare its expanded dimensions with the route you may need to use at the end of a lease.

That is the quiet trade-off behind sofa-in-a-box convenience: the carton gets the sofa into the room; your ownership plan still has to get the full sofa out.

This is a setup and policy analysis, not a hands-on test. Product dimensions and recovery timing were checked against live product pages, the Couch Possum FAQ, Shipping Policy, and Return & Refund Policy on August 31, 2026.
